The famous heart shaped waterhole. Killarney Glen is perfect for the kids. It’s a short but steep walk in.
The Australian Defence Department owns and uses this property for training purposes, and the park is often closed to the public for several days a month. Although open most weekends and school holidays.
Entry to the car park is on the eastern side of the Beechmont–Canungra Road just before the steep section of road.
I recommend taking the walking track to the left down and the old 4wd road back up. Even though we visited in a relatively dry month, we had to take care on the 4wd road. Muddy patches and dry loose rock made the path slippery. Unfortunately, we did the walk the other way around and learned the hard way. Only a few dirty patches on the kid’s bottoms.
So I’ve been back again and walked back up on the 4WD drive road. Lets just say that wasn’t easy, might be shorter and ok for the reasonably fit but defiantly a challenge with kids. So my recommendation is, if you’re going with very young kids take the walking track path to the left both ways.
Old 4wd road track
First take the path to the right of the shabby shack. This path leads you the LOVE HEART shaped water hole, usually the busiest part of the park.
If you take the path to the left, it leads you down the stream. A much more family friendly part. You can also jump off the rocks here. The little ones can play on the rocks and in the shallow rock pools.
Stop by one of the hang gliding take off points.
